New Delhi: Ladakh-based social activist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk has made a significant claim in a recent statement, expressing his displeasure with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He stated that a plan was made to have Rahul Gandhi end his long-running fast at Jantar Mantar, but Gandhi ignored him. Wangchuk says that after this incident, he was disappointed not only with the attitude of the Congress but also with other political parties. Sonam alleged that Rahul Gandhi did not even pay attention to his plan to end the fast.
Sonam Wangchuk revealed in a conversation that his wife, Geetanjali, had tried several times to convey a message to Rahul Gandhi and urge him to break his fast. She wanted Rahul Gandhi to visit Jantar Mantar and offer him juice, bringing an end to his 26-day hunger strike. However, she received no clear or positive response. Wangchuk said he had hoped a prominent opposition leader would show support for the movement, but that did not happen. He said this experience left him disappointed with the political leadership.
Union ministers were also accused of breaking promises
In addition to Rahul Gandhi, Sonam Wangchuk also accused Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh of failing to fulfill their promises. According to him, both leaders had assured him that the photos of their meeting and the soup-feeding ceremony would not be released until he personally announced the end of the fast in the presence of opposition leaders and student representatives. However, these photos were later released. Wangchuk said that this incident weakened his trust in these leaders.
Expressed displeasure over the attitude of political parties
Sonam Wangchuk said that during the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar, leaders of many political parties either did not arrive at all or arrived very late. He believes that political leadership should have played a more active role on such an important issue. He also said that his wife, Geetanjali, had questioned Rahul Gandhi’s decision to protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence, after which she faced criticism and trolling on social media. According to Wangchuk, he had previously made strong comments on issues related to the BJP and Hindutva, but did not receive such a reaction.
Disappointment with leadership
Wangchuk said that supporters of any political party should accept criticism with an open mind. He believes that democracy should allow for diverse views, and that leaders should rise above narrow-mindedness and focus on public issues. He reiterated that his aim was not to target any party, but to garner broad support for issues of public interest.
