Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, celebrated for iconic cinematic milestones like Satya, Rangeelaand Sarkaris gearing up for his next major directorial venture titled Police Company. Headlined by actor Harshvardhan Rane in the lead role and backed by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, the film delves deep into the gritty world of law enforcement and organized crime. Taking a cue from recent box office trends, the makers have opted for a grand, multi-part narrative structure, mirroring the successful release models of blockbusters like Baahubali and Dhurandhar.
Adopting the Two-Part Cinematic Model
When the project was first conceptualized, industry discussions suggested adapting the expansive storyline into an extended web series. However, Ram Gopal Varma firmly believed that the cinematic scale, dramatic tension, and raw energy of the narrative demanded a theatrical experience on the big screen.
Emboldened by the massive commercial success of multi-part releases such as Baahubali and Dhurandharthe creative team decided to divide the sprawling crime saga into two distinct parts. According to production reports, both parts of Police Company will be filmed consecutively and are slated for theatrical releases a few months apart in 2027, following a strategic rollout similar to recent high-profile cinematic franchises.
Unveiling the Gritty 1990s Mumbai Underworld
Set against the volatile backdrop of late 1990s and early 2000s Mumbai, Police Company is a high-stakes crime thriller focusing on the Mumbai Police’s elite Detection Unit, widely known as the Encounter Squad. Formed during a period when criminal syndicates and underworld gangs held the city in a vice-like grip, this specialized unit was tasked with dismantling organized crime networks associated with major underworld kingpins like Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan through a series of high-profile operations.
In the film, Harshvardhan Rane steps into the shoes of the legendary encounter specialist Daya Nayak, leading an ensemble cast that features fresh talent portraying fellow squad members, police officers, and underworld figures. Principal photography is currently underway, with the makers aiming to wrap up the entire shooting schedule by the end of the year and target a mid-2027 premiere for the first installment.
