Lucknow . Yogi government has opened a box of opportunities in the field of medical education for the youth of Uttar Pradesh who are dreaming of becoming doctors. The second counseling of NEET UG-2026 is going to start from September 14 in the state. Meanwhile, the statistics of expansion of medical education show that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has taken a huge leap in the direction of preparing a new generation of doctors.

In the year 2017, there were 36 medical colleges in the state and 4,690 MBBS seats. By August 20, 2026, the number of medical colleges has reached 85 and MBBS seats have reached 13,600. That means, 49 new medical colleges and 8,910 additional MBBS seats have been expanded in eight years. This change is not just a figure of increasing number of medical colleges, but is a story of huge expansion of opportunities available to acquire medical education in the state every year. While in the year 2012 there were a total of 2,740 MBBS seats in the state, now this number has increased to 13,600. This means that the capacity of seats increased by almost five times is becoming the basis for preparing a new generation of doctors in the coming years.

Government medical colleges changed their picture

The role of the government sector has been most important in the expansion of medical education. In the year 2017, there were 15 government medical colleges operating in the state. By August 20, 2026, their number has increased to 45. The number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges has also increased from 1,990 in 2017 to 5,350. That means there has been an increase of 3,360 seats in the government sector in these years. Due to this, the scope of opportunities for the youth in the field of government medical education has expanded more than before. With this expansion of medical education, the basis for providing medical education opportunities in various areas of the state has been strengthened.

Capacity increased in private sector also

The private sector has also contributed to the expansion of medical education. In the year 2017, there were 21 private medical colleges in the state, which has increased to 40 by August 20, 2026. The number of MBBS seats in the private sector has also increased from 2,700 to 8,250. In this way, 5,550 additional MBBS seats have increased in the private sector as compared to the year 2017. The increasing capacity of government and private sector has widened the scope of overall opportunities for medical education in the state.

Strengthening the base of health services with medical education

DG Medical Education Neha Sharma said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, along with increasing the number of medical colleges, emphasis is also being laid on strengthening the infrastructure of medical education. The development of projects like medical colleges, hospitals, nursing colleges and hostels is increasing the capacity to produce trained human resources for health services in the state. The expansion of government medical colleges is an important step towards increasing the reach of medical education in different areas of the state. In the coming years, the doctors trained from these institutions will contribute to the health services of the state and the country.

The foundation is being prepared for the new generation of doctors

This expansion of medical colleges and MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh underlines the priority being given to medical education under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Compared to 2017, the number of medical colleges has increased by 49 and MBBS seats have increased by 8,910. With the increasing capacity of medical education, opportunities have expanded for the youth wishing to become doctors in the state. In the coming years, this increased capacity will give Uttar Pradesh the basis to play a stronger role among the major states in producing the new generation of doctors.

NEET UG second counseling from 14th September

Amidst the increasing opportunities for medical education, the second phase online counseling of NEET UG-2026 will start in Uttar Pradesh from September 14. As per the schedule of Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, Uttar Pradesh, the process will continue till September 25. Online registration in this counseling organized for admission on state quota seats in government and private medical/dental colleges and medical universities will be from 5 pm on September 14 to 11 am on September 17. The merit list will be released on September 17. Choice filling will take place from 5 pm on September 17 to 5 pm on September 19, while the seat allotment result will be declared on September 21.
