Chennai: Chennai Super Kings could be heading towards a major change in their coaching setup, with former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin suggesting that England’s 2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan could emerge as a strong candidate to replace Stephen Fleming as head coach.
Fleming’s departure followed a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign for CSK, leaving the franchise with the task of identifying a new coach ahead of the next season. While no appointment has been officially confirmed, Ashwin has now offered an intriguing insight into the discussions surrounding Fleming’s successor.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he had a strong feeling that Morgan’s name was being discussed and that preliminary conversations could already be taking place. He also mentioned Brendon McCullum as another possible option, although the England coach’s existing commitments could make such an appointment complicated.
Ashwin backs Eoin Morgan as a strong contender
Morgan’s name is particularly interesting because he has extensive experience as a captain and leader in T20 cricket, even though he does not have a long track record as a head coach at the highest level.
The former England batter captained the national side to its first men’s ODI World Cup title in 2019. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL final in 2021. Those experiences could make him an attractive candidate for a franchise such as CSK that is entering a period of transition.
Ashwin said Morgan’s name was “doing the rounds strongly” and suggested that there could be two possible scenarios. Morgan could take charge immediately and oversee the team’s preparations, or CSK could use the upcoming period to build the squad before bringing him in at a later stage.
That distinction could become important because CSK are approaching a significant phase in their team-building cycle. The franchise will need to make decisions about its existing core, identify the next generation of players and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Why Morgan could suit CSK
Morgan would bring something CSK have traditionally valued highly: leadership experience under pressure.
His biggest achievement came in the 2019 World Cup, when England defeated New Zealand in a dramatic final at Lord’s. Under Morgan, England transformed their approach to ODI cricket and developed an aggressive batting philosophy that ultimately helped them win their maiden men’s World Cup.
His IPL experience is another advantage. Morgan played for several franchises during his career and eventually captained KKR. Although his time as a player at the franchise did not produce an IPL trophy, he guided the side to the final in 2021.
For CSK, the appeal would therefore not necessarily be limited to Morgan’s coaching credentials. His experience of building a winning culture, handling senior players and leading teams through transitions could be valuable as the franchise looks beyond its established core.
Brendon McCullum also in the conversation
Ashwin also mentioned Brendon McCullum as another possible candidate.
McCullum has built a strong reputation as a coach since moving into management after his playing career. He worked with England’s Test side and has also been involved with the country’s limited-overs teams.
However, Ashwin pointed out that McCullum’s existing responsibilities with England’s ODI and T20I teams could make it difficult for him to take up the CSK role.
That could potentially strengthen Morgan’s position if CSK want someone who can devote greater attention to the franchise.
Still, neither Morgan nor McCullum has been confirmed as Fleming’s replacement. Ashwin’s comments should therefore be viewed as an indication of the names being discussed rather than an announcement of CSK’s decision.
MS Dhoni could continue to provide leadership
Interestingly, Ashwin believes the immediate answer may not be to hand complete responsibility to a new coach.
Instead, he suggested that MS Dhoni could continue to play an important informal leadership role for at least another year while CSK work through the transition.
Ashwin described Dhoni’s leadership as something that could allow other members of the organisation to work together and provide stability during a difficult period. He argued that this could be the right approach because the timing of the coaching appointment is important and the franchise is only about a year away from the next mega auction.
Dhoni’s continued involvement would therefore give CSK an experienced figure around the team even if the franchise appoints a new head coach.
The former India captain has been central to CSK’s identity since the franchise entered the IPL. His leadership has helped the team win multiple IPL titles and establish itself as one of the competition’s most successful sides.
CSK facing a crucial transition
The coaching change comes after a difficult IPL 2026 season. CSK now face the challenge of rebuilding without Fleming, who had been one of the most important figures in the franchise’s successful era.
Fleming’s relationship with Dhoni and his ability to manage the team’s senior players were important parts of CSK’s strategy for many years. Replacing him will therefore involve more than simply finding a coach with tactical knowledge.
The new head coach will have to work with the franchise’s leadership to determine the team’s future direction, identify players who can form its next core and ensure that the side remains competitive.
This is where someone such as Morgan could become particularly valuable. His international leadership experience and knowledge of the IPL could provide CSK with a different perspective while maintaining the franchise’s emphasis on strong leadership.

Ashwin’s comments indicate that Morgan is being seriously discussed, but the final decision rests with the Chennai franchise. The possibility of Morgan taking over would represent a significant change for CSK after Fleming’s long tenure.
The franchise could also consider other candidates, with McCullum among the names mentioned by Ashwin. At the same time, Dhoni’s continued involvement could provide the stability CSK need while the coaching structure is finalised.
If Morgan eventually takes charge, CSK would be appointing a World Cup-winning captain with significant international and IPL leadership experience. For a franchise entering a rebuilding phase, that could prove to be an intriguing combination.
