Universal sell-off in the stock market: Top 5 companies in the country hit ₹ 1 lakh crore in market cap

Indian stock market Mcap Loss 2026: The domestic stock market saw a heavy sell-off last week amid a tug-of-war between bulls and bears. Due to this sentiment, the market capitalization of 5 giant companies out of the top 10 companies of the country has seen a sharp decline of more than ₹ 1 lakh crore. Last week, the Sensex fell 489.92 points (0.62%) to close at 78,009.25 and the Nifty lost 204.65 points (0.83%) to close at 24,366.00.

Biggest blow to TCS and Reliance

Among the top companies, Tata Group’s IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) suffered the biggest loss. TCS’s market cap fell by ₹34,263.28 crore to ₹8.53 lakh crore. During the same period, the market cap of Reliance Industries, the country’s most valuable company, also fell by ₹ 31,869.13 crore to ₹ 17.70 lakh crore.

The banking sector also slipped

Banking stocks were also not spared in this selling streak. The market cap of State Bank of India (SBI) fell by ₹ 25,891.88 crore to ₹ 9.86 lakh crore. The valuation of HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private sector bank, fell by ₹7,165.37 crore to ₹11.21 lakh crore and ICICI Bank’s market cap fell by ₹2,792.65 crore to ₹10.18 lakh crore.

LIC and Airtel make a strong comeback

Amid this market rout, 5 other top companies gave relief to investors and added a total of ₹ 55,149.45 crore to their market cap. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) saw the highest increase in value by ₹ 26,438.49 crore to ₹ 5.23 lakh crore. While Bharti Airtel’s market cap also increased by ₹ 20,592.13 crore to ₹ 12.43 lakh crore.

Bajaj Finance and L&T also improved

Among the other winners, Bajaj Finance’s market cap increased by ₹3,548.79 crore to ₹6.77 lakh crore, Larsen & Toubro (L&T)’s value increased by ₹2,490.66 crore to ₹5.59 lakh crore and Hindustan Unilever’s value increased by ₹2,079.38 crore to ₹4.91 lakh crore. Reliance Industries topped the Indian market at the weekend, followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, TCS, Bajaj Finance, L&T, LIC and Hindustan Unilever respectively.
