Four patients got a new lease of life by donating two kidneys, liver and heart of 36-year-old Mithun Swain from Odisha to the Government Civil Hospital in Surat, Gujarat. Mithun Swain, a resident of Siddhpur Kalakhadi village in Ganjam district of Odisha, used to work in a loom factory while living in the Keem area of Surat. On July 28, his health suddenly deteriorated. While sitting at home, a part of his face became distorted and his left hand and leg stopped working. He was first taken to a private hospital, from where he was referred to the New Civil Hospital considering his serious condition.
Then volunteers from Angadaan Charitable Trust explained the importance of organ donation to the family. The wife, brother and family members agreed to donate their organs, which was an inspiring decision for the society. As part of the organ donation process, both the kidneys and liver were sent to IKDRC, Ahmedabad, while the heart was taken to UN Mehta Hospital, Ahmedabad.
The rains have also affected air services in Surat due to the red alert issued by the Meteorological Department. Due to incessant rains, the hospital administration decided to send the heart to Ahmedabad by train, which was a first in the country. After discussions with the railway administration, the hospital administration decided to safely transport Mithun Swain’s heart to Ahmedabad in just two hours. Since the heart needed to be transplanted into another patient within four hours, this was the first time such a heart transport was possible in the country.
