New Delhi: Amid campus protests demanding restoration of the students’ union and a row over controversial slogans and posters, Jamia Millia Islamia university on Saturday decided to shift classes of all courses to online mode.
The decision was taken to ensure safety and security of ‘bonafide students’, the university explained.
“In view of the ongoing situation and in order to ensure the safety and security of bonafide students in the university campus, the competent authority, JMI has decided to conduct classes of all courses of the university through online mode with immediate effect until further notice,” stated an October 24 notice signed by JMI registrar Mohd Mahtab Alam Rizvi.
The administration directed faculty members to facilitate the shift to online classes by providing necessary academic support and learning materials.
On-campus protests, seeking reinstatement of student union electoral process at JMI, intensified after posters surfaced with slogans like ‘Free Kashmir’ and ‘Free Sharjeel Imam’.
Delhi Police detained Congress MP Imran Masood on Friday after he visited the university to express solidarity with protesting students.
A number of videos surfaced online, purportedly showing removal of a protest camp set up by students at Gulistan-i-Ghalib garden inside the university campus. The videos appeared to show students being asked to disperse.
