Glenn Maxwell Retirement: 'Big Show''s last show in international cricket! Glenn Maxwell retires, 14 year journey ends

Sydney: Australia's legendary all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket, ending his 14-year career. This 38-year-old great player of limited overs cricket played his last match for Australia against Oman during the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year. “I am retiring from international cricket as well as domestic cricket for Victoria (50-over matches and four-day red-ball cricket),” Maxwell said on 'The Final Word' podcast on Tuesday.

He said, “Looking at the Olympic Games (in 2028), I think there are going to be a lot of changes in the next 12 to 24 months, so it is important to ensure that young players are given attention and they get a chance to face the pressure of the international level.” Maxwell, known as 'Big Show' for his power-hitting, played 149 ODIs, 130 T20 Internationals and seven Test matches for Australia. He was also a member of Australia's teams that won two ODI World Cups (2015 and 2023) and one T20 World Cup (2021). “Maybe now is the time when I need to pay a little more attention to my body so that I can compete in the few tournaments left in my career,” he said.

Maxwell said, “I had some hope that maybe I might get a chance to play the farewell match at MCG (Melbourne), but I can understand the further strategy of the team management very well.” Maxwell has been an important member of Australia's limited overs cricket and due to his excellent performance, the team won many matches. Despite fatigue, he scored a double century against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is considered one of the best innings of this tournament. Maxwell scored 3,990 runs in ODIs at a strike rate of 126.7 and 2,897 runs in T20 Internationals at a strike rate of 154.4. He made his mark as one of Australia's best all-rounders, scoring 10 centuries and 136 wickets across all formats in his international career.
