Government banned 3 Chinese apps that hacked and shut down moving e-rickshaws, many prank videos were going viral

New Delhi. The government has issued an order to remove three mobile apps BAT-BMS, LosiG and Epoch Li-ion, which have become a problem for e-rickshaw drivers in many big cities including Delhi, from the app store. Even after this strict action taken by the IT Ministry, these apps are currently visible on the Play Store. In fact, for the last few days, many such videos were going viral on social media, in which mischievous elements were suddenly stopping the moving e-rickshaw through Bluetooth app. Due to this, not only were the drivers facing a lot of trouble on the roads but the risk of road accidents had also increased.

Took advantage of weak security

Investigation revealed that these apps were originally created by Chinese company Shenzhen Grenergy Technology to monitor solar energy equipment and lithium batteries of boats. The power cut feature given in these started being misused by mischievous elements in India and people troubled by traffic jams. These apps, within a radius of 10 to 15 meters, could hack the batteries of those e-rickshaws in whose Bluetooth Management System (BMS) no password was set during local assembly or a weak default password like 1234 and 0000 was left.

Lead-acid and password safe batteries

It is a matter of relief that all the electric vehicles in the country are not affected by this problem. E-rickshaws with old lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries in which dealers have set a strong password cannot be controlled through these apps. Apart from this, the battery system of the cars is completely safe as it is protected by strong encryption.
In view of this security lapse, experts have advised e-rickshaw drivers to immediately go to their nearest dealer and get a strong and unique password set in the Bluetooth connection of the battery. Also, in case the rickshaw suddenly stops in the middle of the road, instead of panicking, instructions have been given to park the vehicle on the side by turning on the indicator and turn off the main switch (MCB) and turn it on again.
