Geneva, Sept 15:
India’s defending world champion D Gukesh will face Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the 2026 FIDE World Championship match, setting up a historic clash between two of the youngest players ever to contest the chess crown.
FIDE has confirmed Geneva as the venue for the much-anticipated championship match. Gukesh, who became the youngest-ever world champion after defeating Ding Liren in Singapore in 2024, will defend his title against Sindarov, who earned his place by winning the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Both players will be 20 when the match begins, making it the youngest world championship contest in history.
The match will consist of 14 classical games. The first player to reach 7.5 points will be crowned world champion. If the score is tied after the 14 games, the title will be decided through tiebreaks. FIDE has described the contest as a meeting between two leading figures of the new generation of chess.
The championship carries a total prize fund of $2.5 million. The exact schedule and detailed programme have been finalised by FIDE, with the championship to be staged in Geneva in November and December. FIDE had earlier set a minimum prize fund of $2.5 million for the 2026 match.
For Gukesh, the match will be the first defence of the world title he won at the age of 18. His victory over Ding Liren made him the 18th world champion and the youngest player to hold the crown. Sindarov, meanwhile, arrives as one of the most promising young grandmasters in the game after securing his Candidates victory.
The clash promises to be more than a battle for the world title. It will also showcase the next generation of chess at the highest level, with two 20-year-olds fighting for supremacy on the biggest stage in the sport.
