Jaipur: The Rajasthan civic poll results have delivered a mixed verdict for the BJP and Congress, with the ruling party emerging as the largest force across urban local bodies but the Opposition making significant gains in several important cities.
The BJP won 4,179 of the 10,235 declared wards, compared with 3,613 for Congress. Independents also put up a strong performance, winning 2,273 wards and emerging as a crucial factor in several local bodies where neither major party secured a majority.
The results cover 309 urban local bodies across Rajasthan, including 10 municipal corporations, 47 municipal councils and 252 municipalities.
BJP Wins Four Municipal Corporations
The BJP secured clear majorities in four of the state’s 10 municipal corporations Jaipur, Udaipur, Bhilwara and Kota. It also emerged as the largest party in Alwar and Jaipur.
In Jaipur, the BJP came close to a clear majority in the 150-member corporation, while Congress remained in second place. The result allows the BJP to retain a strong position in the state capital, although the margin was narrower than a sweeping victory would have suggested.
The BJP also secured a comfortable majority in Udaipur, where it won 53 of 80 wards, and performed strongly in Bhilwara.
Congress Makes Big Gains In Bikaner And Ajmer
Congress secured a clear majority in Bikaner, marking one of the most significant setbacks for the BJP in the urban polls.
The party also emerged as the single-largest force in Ajmer and Pali. In Ajmer, Congress won 37 of the 80 wards, while the BJP secured 32 and independents won 11. The result ended the BJP's 36-year hold as the leading party in the Ajmer civic body.
Congress also registered a major victory in Jhalawar, an area associated with former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje. The party won 29 of the 45 seats in the Jhalawar Municipal Council, compared with 13 for the BJP.
Independents Emerge As Key Players
Independent candidates have emerged as one of the biggest stories of the Rajasthan civic elections.
In 177 of the 309 urban local bodies, neither the BJP nor Congress crossed the majority mark. The BJP was ahead in 96 of these bodies, Congress led in 69 and the two parties were tied in 12. This means independents and smaller parties could play a decisive role in determining who forms the local boards.
The biggest example came from Bharatpur, the home turf of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. Independents won 36 of the 65 wards, compared with 20 for the BJP and seven for Congress.
Jodhpur also produced a closely fought contest, with BJP and Congress ending up level on 44 seats each.
What The Results Mean For BJP And Congress
The results reinforce the BJP's strong position in Rajasthan's urban electorate, but they also reveal areas where the party faces a tougher contest than expected.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma described the outcome as an endorsement of his government's work and the BJP's development agenda. BJP leaders also highlighted the party’s overall lead across the urban local bodies.
For Congress, the victories in Bikaner, Ajmer, Pali and Jhalawar offer some political encouragement despite the party finishing behind the BJP in the overall ward tally.
The strong performance of independents adds another layer to the results, with post-poll alliances and negotiations likely to determine control of several civic bodies.
The Rajasthan civic verdict therefore presents neither a complete BJP sweep nor a Congress revival across the state. Instead, it points to a more competitive urban political landscape ahead of the next major electoral battle.
