Ho Chi Minh City plans 13 new bus routes to connect Long Thanh airport
According to a proposal submitted by the city Department of Construction to the People’s Committee, the routes will connect major transport hubs such as interprovincial bus stations, urban centers, expressways, and national highways.
They will mainly run through key arterial roads, densely populated areas and tourist destinations.
Unlike conventional services, the new routes will be oriented toward a high-quality airport shuttle model. Some will stop only at major transit hubs, limiting intermediate pick-ups to reduce travel times.
The vehicles will range in capacity from nine to 80 seats.
The 13 proposed routes are Saigon Bus Station – Long Thanh; Tan Son Nhat – Long Thanh, Binh Duong Bus Station – Long Thanh, New Eastern Bus Station – Long Thanh, Tan Son Nhat – Thu Thiem – Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Tan Son Nhat – Ba Son Bridge – Long Son – Long Hai, Tan Son Nhat – Cho Lon – Phu My – Dat Do – Phuoc Hai, Vung Tau Bus Station – Long Thanh, District 8 Bus Station – Long Thanh, Bau Bang Bus Station – Long Thanh; Western Bus Station – Long Thanh; Long Thanh – Phuoc Hai – Long Hai, and Long Thanh – Phuoc Buu – Ho Tram.
Besides, the department proposed adjusting four existing routes on National Highway 51 (60-3, 72-1, 72-2B, 172) to enhance airport connectivity.

The department has recommended implementation in three phases in line with demand.
In phase one, starting from the third quarter of this year, four existing routes will be connected alongside the launch of two airport express bus lines: Saigon Bus Station – Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat – Long Thanh, catering to direct travel and transfers between the two airports.
Phase two in 2027 will add five routes, including connections from Binh Duong, the New Eastern Bus Station, and corridors linking Tan Son Nhat airport with Thu Thiem and Vung Tau.
Phase three, expected in the fourth quarter of 2027, will complete the network.
As the routes are interprovincial, implementation requires consultation with the Ministry of Construction and coordination between Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai to finalize the network and operator selection.
Long Thanh International Airport is expected to become operational by the end of this year.
Access to it now is mainly via the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway and National Highways 1 and 51, while rail and metro links are expected to be built after 2030.
State-owned joint-stock company Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) earlier this week proposed that international flights should move gradually from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh starting this year.
By 2027, Long Thanh is expected to handle more than 90% of international passenger traffic to HCMC.
According to the ACV, which manages 22 airports across the country, the transition of flights from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh will make the new airport a global aviation hub.
