There’s no single answer to this question, as a doctor’s income can vary depending on their workplace, experience, specialization, and institution.
How much stipend is given during internship?
After completing MBBS, students undergo a mandatory internship. During this period, they are paid a stipend, not a salary. The amount varies by institution and state. In government medical colleges, the stipend typically ranges from ₹18,000 to ₹30,000 per month.
At central institutions like AIIMS and JIPMER, this amount can range from ₹23,000 to ₹30,000. However, at many private or deemed universities, the stipend ranges from ₹7,000 to ₹15,000 per month. Stipend amounts also vary from state to state.
Income increases on becoming a junior resident
After completing their internship, doctors’ monthly income increases significantly if they work as junior residents. A first-year junior resident typically earns between 55,000 and 65,000 rupees per month, while in the second year, this amount can reach 60,000 and 70,000 rupees.
In the third year, the salary can range from ₹65,000 to ₹80,000 per month. At premier central institutes like AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, and NIMHANS, this amount can be ₹75,000 to ₹90,000 or even more, including allowances.
Earnings increase after PG
If doctors complete a postgraduate degree such as MD, MS, or DNB after MBBS, they can work as senior residents. At this level, the responsibilities increase and the salary also improves. Senior residents in central government institutions can earn approximately ₹95,000 to ₹1.20 lakh per month.
In state government medical colleges, this amount can range from 80,000 to 1 lakh rupees. Whereas in private hospitals, salaries can range from 60,000 to 1 lakh rupees or even more, depending on experience and the institution. Experience plays a crucial role in salary in the medical field.
