How to Make a Traditional English Breakfast at Home

A traditional Full English Breakfast is a hearty meal featuring eggs, sausages, bacon, baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. It is filling, comforting and surprisingly easy to prepare at home.

Ingredients

For 2 servings:

  • 4 pork sausages
  • 4–6 rashers of back bacon
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup baked beans
  • 150 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, halved
  • 4 slices of bread
  • 1–2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Optional: black pudding

Method

1. Cook the sausages

Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sausages and cook for about 12–15 minutes, turning regularly until browned and cooked through.

2. Fry the bacon

Add the bacon to the same pan and cook for 3–5 minutes, depending on how crispy you like it. Remove and keep warm.

3. Prepare the mushrooms and tomatoes

Add a little butter to the pan. Cook the mushrooms for around 5–7 minutes until golden and tender.

Place the tomato halves cut-side down and cook for 3–4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Heat the baked beans

Warm the baked beans gently in a small saucepan. Stir occasionally and avoid boiling them vigorously.

5. Fry the eggs

Add a little oil or butter to a clean pan. Crack in the eggs and fry until the whites are completely set while keeping the yolks slightly runny, if preferred.

6. Toast the bread

Toast the bread until golden and serve with butter. Traditional English breakfasts can also be served with fried bread instead of toast.

How to Serve

Arrange the sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans, mushrooms and grilled tomatoes on a large warm plate. Add toast or fried bread on the side.

If you’re making a more traditional version, add black pudding as well.

Tips for the Best Full English Breakfast

  • Cook the sausages over medium-low heat so they brown without burning.
  • Don’t overcook the eggs; runny yolks add richness to the plate.
  • Keep cooked ingredients warm while finishing the rest.
  • A little of the bacon fat can be used to cook the mushrooms for extra flavour.
  • Serve immediately while everything is hot.
