The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 will have a new format, and one part of it could initially look confusing: the Super 7 seedings.
You may see terms such as A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3 and AB4 in the World Cup schedule. At first glance, it may appear that A1 means the team finishing first in Group A, A2 means second, and so on.
But that is not how it works.
The ICC has already assigned these positions to seven teams before the tournament. So, for example, A1 means Indiaprovided India qualify for the Super 7. It does not necessarily mean India have to finish first in Group A.
Let us understand the entire system in the simplest possible way.
How Teams Qualify for the World Cup 2027 Super 7
The main Group Stage has 12 teams divided into two groups of six.
Group A: India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A
Group B: New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and Qualifier B
Every team plays the other five teams in its group once.
After that, the top three teams from Group A and top three from Group B qualify for the Super 7.
That gives us six teams.
There is still one place left.
The fourth-placed teams from Group A and Group B are compared, and the better of those two teams also qualifies.
That gives us the seven teams for the Super 7.
What Do A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3 and AB4 Mean?
This is the most important part to understand.
The ICC has already given seven major teams fixed Super 7 indicators:
| Indicator | Pre-Seeded Team |
|---|---|
| A1 | India |
| A2 | Australia |
| A3 | Pakistan |
| AB4 | England |
| B1 | New Zealand |
| B2 | South Africa |
| B3 | Sri Lanka |
These are pre-assigned seedingsnot the final positions in the Group Stage table.
For example, imagine the final Group A table has:
- Australia
- Pakistan
- India
All three qualify for the Super 7.
But India do not become A3 just because they finished third.
India remain A1Australia remain A2and Pakistan remain A3.
That is because those Super 7 positions were allocated before the tournament.
Example: Bangladesh Qualify Ahead of Sri Lanka
Now comes the interesting part.
What happens if one of the pre-seeded teams fails to qualify?
Suppose Bangladesh have an excellent Group Stage and qualify for the Super 7, while Sri Lanka fail to qualify.
Sri Lanka were originally assigned B3.
Therefore, Bangladesh would take Sri Lanka’s B3 position in the Super 7 schedule.
So the first scheduled Super 7 match is:
A2 vs B3 — 25 October in Johannesburg
Normally that means:
Australia vs Sri Lanka
But if Sri Lanka are eliminated and Bangladesh qualify in their place, it becomes:
Australia vs Bangladesh
Bangladesh would then follow the entire B3 fixture path that had originally been assigned to Sri Lanka.
In simple words:
Sri Lanka out → Bangladesh in → Bangladesh become B3.
What If Afghanistan Qualify Ahead of Pakistan?
Let us take another hypothetical example.
Group A contains India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A.
Pakistan are pre-seeded as A3.
Imagine India, Australia and Afghanistan qualify, but Pakistan fail to make the Super 7.
If Afghanistan are the team that displace Pakistan in the qualifying positions, Afghanistan would inherit Pakistan’s A3 position.
So wherever the Super 7 schedule says A3you would now read it as Afghanistan.
For example:
7 November: A1 vs A3
Normally:
India vs Pakistan
But in this scenario it becomes:
India vs Afghanistan.
Similarly:
13 November: A2 vs A3
Normally:
Australia vs Pakistan
In this example:
Australia vs Afghanistan.
So the easiest way to remember it is:
Pakistan out → Afghanistan in their place → Afghanistan take A3.
What If Zimbabwe Qualify Instead of Pakistan?
Exactly the same principle applies.
Suppose Zimbabwe qualify from Group A and Pakistan are eliminated, with Zimbabwe taking the qualifying place that Pakistan would otherwise have occupied.
Pakistan’s Super 7 indicator is A3.
Therefore:
Pakistan out → Zimbabwe replace them → Zimbabwe become A3.
The A3 schedule would then belong to Zimbabwe.
That means a scheduled A1 vs A3 match would become India vs Zimbabweassuming India also qualify.
The names can change, but the A1/A2/A3/B1/B2/B3/AB4 fixture structure remains fixed.
Why Has the ICC Used This System?
There is a practical reason.
If the ICC waited until the entire Group Stage was completed before deciding every Super 7 fixture, fans would not know in advance where their team might play.
Pre-seeding gives supporters, broadcasters and teams a much clearer potential route through the tournament.
For example, an India supporter knows that if India qualify while retaining their designated seed, India will follow the A1 schedule.
Likewise, Australia follow A2, Pakistan A3, New Zealand B1, South Africa B2, Sri Lanka B3 and England AB4 — as long as those teams qualify and retain their respective allocated positions.
If a pre-seeded side is displaced by a non-seeded qualifier, the qualifying team inherits that seed’s route.
Super 7 Starts From Zero
There is another very important rule.
Group Stage points will not carry forward into the Super 7.
So even if a team wins all five of its Group Stage matches, it does not enter the Super 7 with those points.
All seven qualifying teams effectively get a fresh start.
Every team plays the other six teams once, producing 21 Super 7 matches in total.
After all 21 matches, the top four teams in the Super 7 table qualify for the semi-finals.
World Cup 2027 Super 7 Full Schedule With Seed Indicators
Keep this key in mind while reading the schedule:
A1 = India
A2 = Australia
A3 = Pakistan
AB4 = England
B1 = New Zealand
B2 = South Africa
B3 = Sri Lanka
These team names represent the ICC’s pre-seeded allocations. If a pre-seeded team is displaced by a non-seeded qualifier, the replacement team takes the relevant seed and its fixtures.
| Date | Super 7 Fixture | Pre-Seeded Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 Oct | A2 vs B3 | Australia vs Sri Lanka | Johannesburg |
| 26 Oct | B1 vs A3 | New Zealand vs Pakistan | Gqeberha |
| 27 Oct | B2 vs AB4 | South Africa vs England | Tshwane |
| 28 Oct | A1 vs A2 | India vs Australia | Victoria Falls |
| 29 Oct | B1 vs B3 | New Zealand vs Sri Lanka | KuGompo City |
| 30 Oct | A3 vs AB4 | Pakistan vs England | Victoria Falls |
| 31 Oct | B2 vs A1 | South Africa vs India | Johannesburg |
| 1 Nov | A2 vs B1 | Australia vs New Zealand | Victoria Falls |
| 2 Nov | B3 vs AB4 | Sri Lanka vs England | Cape Town |
| 3 Nov | B2 vs A3 | South Africa vs Pakistan | Durban |
| 4 Nov | A1 vs B1 | India vs New Zealand | Paarl |
| 5 Nov | A2 vs AB4 | Australia vs England | Durban |
| 6 Nov | B2 vs B3 | South Africa vs Sri Lanka | Bloemfontein |
| 7 Nov | A1 vs A3 | India vs Pakistan | Cape Town |
| 8 Nov | B1 vs AB4 | New Zealand vs England | Durban |
| 9 Nov | B2 vs A2 | South Africa vs Australia | Gqeberha |
| 10 Nov | A3 vs B3 | Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | Bloemfontein |
| 11 Nov | A1 vs AB4 | India vs England | Gqeberha |
| 12 Nov | B2 vs B1 | South Africa vs New Zealand | Cape Town |
| 13 Nov | A2 vs A3 | Australia vs Pakistan | Bloemfontein |
| 14 Nov | A1 vs B3 | India vs Sri Lanka | Durban |
If Bangladesh/Zimbabwe/Afghanistan qualifies for super 7 then for checking their schedule just replace that team(which doesn’t able to qualify) with the non seeded team which gets qualified in that team’s place.
One Simple Formula to Remember the World Cup 2027 Seedings
The easiest way to understand the whole system is this:
The seed belongs to the pre-seeded team if that team qualifies. If that team is displaced by a non-seeded team in qualification, the qualifying team takes over that seed and its Super 7 schedule.
For example:
Sri Lanka qualify → Sri Lanka remain B3.
Bangladesh qualify in Sri Lanka’s place → Bangladesh take B3.
Similarly:
Pakistan qualify → Pakistan remain A3.
Afghanistan or Zimbabwe qualify in Pakistan’s place → that team takes A3.
So fans should not read A1, A2 or B1 as normal finishing positions. They are primarily schedule indicators created in advance by the ICC.
Once this distinction is clear, the seemingly complicated World Cup 2027 Super 7 schedule becomes much easier to understand.
