Pakistan had to face a humiliating 0-3 defeat in the three-match Test series against England. In the last test match of the series played at Birmingham’s Edgebest ground, the Pakistani team struggled a bit, but it was not enough to win. England won that match by 8 wickets and eliminated Pakistan 0-3 in the series.
Now the International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken strong action against the Pakistani team. The slow over rate proved costly for Pakistan in the Edgbaston Test. The ICC has fined the Pakistani team 50 percent of the match fee, and also deducted 11 points from its account in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.
Even after including the stipulated time allowance, Pakistan team remained 11 overs behind the target. For this reason this action was taken against the team. ICC Elite Panel match referee Ranjan Madugalle pronounced the punishment in the case. On-field umpires Paul Rifle and Chris Gaffney, third umpire Allahuddin Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren had accused the slow over rate.
According to ICC rules, a fine of 5 percent of the players’ match fees is imposed for each over reduced in the stipulated time. However, its maximum limit is 50 percent. Due to Pakistan being 11 overs short, it was fined a maximum of 50 per cent.
Pakistan has suffered a bigger blow than the financial penalty in WTC. As per the rules, one WTC point is deducted for each short over. Therefore, due to 11 overs being short, 11 points were directly deducted from Pakistan’s account. Pakistan was already at the bottom of the WTC table. After this cut his condition has worsened. His marks percentage has reduced to 4.63. This is doubly difficult for the team after the 0-3 defeat against England.
