Crores of people across the country use UPI to make payments every day. BJP government also considers it as one of its biggest achievements and it is promoted extensively but now a controversy has arisen regarding UPI. Government organization National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has said that now charges will have to be paid on more than 2000 UPI payments. Now the debate has started regarding this charge and the government is also facing opposition. In this matter, Ashneer Grover sarcastically said that if Subhash Chandra had not waived Rs 22,000 crore, then UPI would have run free for the next 20 years.
Ashneer Grover was the co-founder of BharatPe and has been associated with the Fin-Tech industry. He expressed his opinion in this matter on a TV channel. He said that this is the biggest achievement of the government in the last 14 years but now the government wants to end this too. He said that India is the world leader in Fin-Tech and if the government is spoiling it then the government itself is committing suicide.
Ashneer Grover taunted
Ashneer Grover is openly criticizing the government on this issue. He went to many TV channels and expressed his views on this issue. He said that if any kind of charge is taken on UPI, it will have to be paid by the customer. He said that this is not a charge but a kind of tax which the government is imposing. Giving the example of tax on oil, he said that just as the consumer makes the final payment for every tax on oil, similarly the consumer will also pay the charges on UPI.
Taking a dig at the government, Ashneer Grover said, 'If Chandra Saheb's (Subhash Chandra) Rs 22,000 crore had not been waived, then UPI could have run free in India for the next 20 years, because according to the government's own figures, UPI has been given a subsidy of Rs 8,000 crore.'
Is the government earning money from NPCI?
He also said that NPCI, the body that runs UPI, has hard cash of Rs 6,119 crore on its balance sheet and pre-tax operating profit of about Rs 1,900 crore. According to him, NPCI can run UPI for free throughout its life on the basis of its cash and profits and the government has nothing to do with it. Not only this, he further claimed that last year the government has also earned tax of about Rs 1,000 from NPCI.
Grover is criticizing the government
Ashneer Grover is openly criticizing the government on this issue. He says that the government should not impose any kind of charge on UPI. Their argument is that the government is already making money and if charges are imposed on UPI it will weaken it. The opposition is also continuously cornering the government on this issue.
