Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu is embroiled in controversies. The Congress party has drawn criticism after it allegedly initiated disciplinary action against students who were missing from a mandatory program organized on September 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, on the campus.
The student council of IIM Jammu issued disciplinary notices and a fine of Rs 500 to the students who did not attend the event. It is written in the notice that the students were found absent from the Deepotsav ritual held on 17 September 2026, although this program was mandatory. Students have been asked to give written explanation in this regard.

What conditions were put in the notice?
According to the notice, exemption from absence will be given only on medical grounds and for this it will be necessary to provide an official written note from the campus dispensary 'Sanjeevani' recommending bed rest. The notice also said that the students will have to reply by September 18, failing which a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on them.
Congress raised questions
Congress national general secretary and Jammu and Kashmir in-charge Syed Nasir Hussain criticized this action and wrote on He asked whether it is the academic responsibility of an institute like IIM or whether PM Modi's promotion has been brought as a compulsory activity on the campus.

'Students should stay away from BJP's campaign'
Nasir Hussain said that educational institutions should promote independent thinking and not force students to attend events of political leaders or threaten them with fines. He said that BJP's publicity campaigns should be kept away from major educational institutions of the country.
What clarification has IIM Jammu given?
An official spokesperson of IIM Jammu said that no such penalty has been imposed on any student. The spokesperson said that this incident is being misrepresented and politicized. He told that this matter will be discussed in a meeting soon.
