ADAS Limitations: Nowadays, while buying a new car, the first thing most people look at is the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Features like Lane Keep Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Adaptive Cruise Control claim to make driving safer and more comfortable. But the question is, is this technology as effective on Indian roads as it is shown in advertisements? Broken roads and blurry lane markings become the biggest challenge.

Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist features of ADAS work with the help of white or yellow lane markings on the road. But in many places in India, the lane markings on the roads are either blurred or completely missing. In such a situation, the car’s cameras and radar sensors are not able to gather correct information. As a result the system suddenly stops working and the driver has to immediately take full control of the vehicle.

ADAS does not work every time in Indian traffic

It is being seen that the traffic pattern on Indian roads is quite different from that of developed countries. It is common for autos, bikes, pedestrians or cattle to suddenly come on the road. In such a situation, many times the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system of ADAS becomes more sensitive than necessary and applies brakes suddenly. In heavy traffic, this situation can also increase the risk of collision with a vehicle coming from behind. Therefore experts believe that ADAS should not be seen as a substitute for the driver, but only as an assistive technology.

Efficiency of technology decreases in rain, fog and dust

At the same time, weather also has a big impact on the performance of ADAS. Heavy rain, dense fog or dust accumulated on the windshield can affect the vision of cameras and radar. In such situations, the car system often turns off ADAS features by showing an error. Which simply means that at the time when the driver needs technical help the most, this system may be limited or inoperative.
