Inauguration of Maruti Suzuki’s Kharkhoda Plant by Prime Minister Narendra Modi; Aim to make 40 lakh vehicles every year!
Maruti Suzuki’s fourth vehicle manufacturing plant at Kharkhoda in Haryana was grandly inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum held in New Delhi. On this historic occasion, Suzuki Motors Chairman Toshihiro Suzuki announced his commitment to expand the plant into one of the largest car manufacturing plants in the world.
India accounts for a large share of Suzuki’s global production
Inaugurating the project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that today two-thirds of Suzuki’s global production of cars is being manufactured in India, and from here they are being exported to more than 100 countries of the world. Not only cars, but also bikes from famous Japanese brands like Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda are exported from India all over the world.

The Prime Minister appreciated the partnership between India and Japan
“When Japan’s technology and investment and India’s speed and scale come together, the whole world benefits. Be it air conditioners, power grid equipment or medical technology.”
Despite current supply chain disruptions and trade uncertainty around the world, India and Japan have strengthened their economic ties. “When the going gets tough, only the strong stand up stronger,” Modi believed. He also mentioned that a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific region is a shared priority of both the countries.

35,000 crore investment and massive expansion
Suzuki Motors Chairman Toshihiro Suzuki said the capacity of the Kharkhoda plant will be increased directly from 5 lakh units to 1 million units per annum, making it one of the largest car manufacturing plants in the world. A total investment of Rs 35,000 crore is proposed for this entire project.
Stating that this project is a good example of the success of ‘Make in India’ and India-Japan friendship, he explained that due to the favorable policies of Prime Minister Modi, Suzuki Company is increasing the pace of investment, employment, export and technology in India, contributing to the journey of ‘Developed India’.
Background of the project
In August 2022, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of this project virtually. Subsequently, the plant was commissioned in February 2025 with an initial capacity of 2.5 lakh units per annum and now a major expansion announcement has been made with the official inauguration of its fourth phase in July 2026.
