Indian Army in Sudan, 565 ‘Blue Helmets’ Received UN Peace Prize

The United Nations awarded 565 Indian peacekeepers engaged in peacekeeping in South Sudan. They have been awarded the United Nations Medal for outstanding achievements in service, protection and peacekeeping to citizens. Among these 565 soldiers awarded, there are 53 women soldiers. This honor given by the United Nations is a matter of pride not only for the army but also for India.

According to a statement by the United Nations, peacekeepers deployed by India have been given the honor for their outstanding actions in the areas of protection of civilians, increased involvement among local communities, organization of veterinary camps, women’s self-defense training, fight against gender-based violence and easy access of humanitarian aid. The UN as well as the Permanent Mission of India to the UN also congratulated the Indian forces for this achievement.

Those who are deployed by the United Nations in troubled regions of the world. They do peacekeeping work there under the instructions of the United Nations.

It may be noted that India has a long and glorious history of activity in UN peacekeeping missions. India is the world’s second largest contributor of military and police personnel to the United Nations. Currently, more than 4,200 Indian military and police personnel are deployed in various UN missions. Out of which the number of female members is 155. So far 180 Indians have been martyred in this peacekeeping operation.
