​Automobile Desk: The Indian automobile industry has achieved a significant milestone. Two of the country’s leading automakers, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, have surpassed the world’s largest brands on a key frontier in electric vehicle (EV) technology. According to the latest “Global Automaker Rating” report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), Indian automakers have topped the list of most energy-efficient vehicles.
This ICCT study conducted an in-depth analysis of the performance of electric vehicles from 22 leading global automobile manufacturers. Energy efficiency was measured using watt-hours (Wh/km) of power consumption. To ensure fair comparisons, the report also factored in the vehicle’s total weight, allowing for a more accurate assessment of the capabilities of light and heavy vehicles.
Tata Motors secured the first position globally in this rigorous energy efficiency test, scoring a perfect 100 out of 100. Mahindra followed with 89 points. In comparison, American giant Tesla scored 79 points, and China’s BYD scored only 69 points. These figures clearly demonstrate that Indian automakers are far ahead of global leaders in terms of delivering superior performance with lower power consumption.
The report also highlights that energy efficiency isn’t the sole criterion for an EV’s overall efficiency. The overall quality of an ideal electric vehicle depends on several other factors, including driving range on a single charge, charging speed, total global sales, new models available in the market, the company’s total investment in technology and research, and battery recycling systems.
In the overall global ranking, which combines all these parameters, Tesla retained the top spot with 83 points, while BYD ranked second with 72 points. Tata Motors ranked 15th with 33 points, and Mahindra ranked 17th with 30 points, based on its limited global market presence and infrastructure.
This is the first time ICCT has included India’s rapidly growing passenger vehicle market along with the world’s six major auto markets in its international report. Mahindra has also been ranked for the first time in this global study, indicating that the Indian EV market is now making a strong presence internationally.
