In Massachusetts, America, a 17-year-old teenager of Indian origin has been accused of allegedly murdering his mother and younger brother. Police arrested him on Wednesday morning after searching throughout the night. The accused has been identified as Arjun Arvind, a student of Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. He has been charged with two counts of murder in the death of his 45-year-old mother Sudha Venkatesan and 14-year-old younger brother Siddharth Aravind.
According to officials, the teenager has also been charged with two counts each of assault and assault on a household member or family member. Apart from this, charges related to using someone’s vehicle without permission and vehicle theft have also been leveled against him. According to the police, the case is from Acton city and both the bodies were recovered from the family’s house on Martha Lane.
What is the whole matter?
A tutor had reached the family’s house around 6:30 pm on Tuesday evening. He had a pre-arranged meeting, but he could not go inside the house nor contact anyone. After this the tutor contacted Arjun’s father. The father also tried to contact his wife and children, but could not reach him. He then requested the Acton police to investigate the safety of the family. Arjun’s father told that he had met his wife before going to work that morning. Arjun’s younger brother Siddharth was last seen around noon.
When the police reached inside the house, they found both Sudha and Siddharth dead. According to investigators, Siddharth’s body was found on the first floor of the house, while his mother Sudha’s body was found in the basement.
Police said that there were clear injury marks on both their bodies. However, the exact cause and manner of his death has not been revealed yet. The report of the Chief Medical Examiner is awaited. Investigators are also trying to find out whether any weapon was used in the murder or not.
What came to light in the police investigation?
Arjun was not present there when the police reached the house. According to officials, he left home in his mother’s Honda Accord car. After this the police started searching for him. Along with law enforcement agencies, the general public was also alerted to keep an eye on the teen and the car.
The search ended Wednesday morning when Wayland police received a report of an alarm in a parking lot related to another incident. There the police found Arjun inside his mother’s car. He was arrested without incident. This case is being investigated under the supervision of Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo.
What was Arjun searching on ChatGPT?
During the investigation, the police also got information about Arjun’s online activities. According to officials, his behavior before the murder was worrying. Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office said that investigation has revealed that Arjun had recently used the Internet and ChatGPT to search about fantasies related to the murder of his family members.
According to investigators, Arjun also used ChatGPT while developing ideas for “Gothic novel-kind of stories”. In this he was asking questions related to creating characters and imaginary situations.
However, officials have not said that these searches conducted on ChatGPT directly prove the motive for murder. Police are still investigating what happened in the house and why the teen allegedly did this.
What are the allegations included?
Arjun has been charged with two counts of murder in the death of his mother and younger brother. Apart from this, he is also accused of two charges of assault and battery on a member of the household or family, two charges of assault and battery, use of a motor vehicle without permission and theft of a motor vehicle.
Arjun was expected to be produced in Lowell Juvenile Court on Wednesday. However, this court does not have the jurisdiction to hear murder cases. Therefore, the murder and related assault charges will be heard in Concord District Court at a later date.
