India’s cultural identity in America: International Yoga Day celebrated from Texas to New York
Washington, June 21. More than a decade after the United Nations declared June 21 as International Yoga Day (IYD), it has become one of the most prominent examples of India’s cultural identity and influence in the US. It can be easily guessed that Yoga is organized on a large scale throughout America. Yoga Day is celebrated in parks, universities, community centres, public places and government institutions across the country. Not only this, millions of Americans practice yoga regularly.
This year, International Yoga Day was celebrated across America, from parks in Texas and Times Square in New York to state legislatures and the Governor’s office. This shows that this tradition, which started in India, has now become a nationwide health wellness movement and how much it is being liked among the common people. This year’s theme was ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’, with special emphasis on preventive health care, active lifestyle and mental well-being.
The biggest event took place in Sugar Land, Texas
The biggest celebration took place in Sugar Land, Texas on Saturday. Here Consul General D.C. Manjunath joined Mayor Carol McCutcheon at Brazos River Park for an event featuring Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh and Hindu Youth. The event brought together people, elected officials and yoga enthusiasts for outdoor yoga sessions and wellness activities. Manjunath talked about the role of yoga in promoting ‘holistic health, well-being and harmony’.
In New York, the Consul General of India conducted a yoga session in Central Park before the main event. Describing it as a “high energy evening”, the Consul General said the event celebrates wellness in the heart of New York City.
Preparations for a big event in Times Square
This time thousands of people are expected to participate in the ‘Solstice in Times Square’ event organized every year. The event continues the tradition of transforming Times Square, one of the world’s busiest commercial districts, into a giant open-air yoga studio during the month of June.
In Washington DC, the Indian Embassy led the organization of International Yoga Day events at the Lincoln Memorial on Friday. Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered at the venue behind the National Mall for a group yoga session on the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’. The event featured diplomats, lawmakers, community leaders, yoga practitioners, and members of the Indian-American community, highlighting the growing appeal of yoga across the United States.
Yoga Day proposal in New York State Assembly
This year’s events have received widespread recognition from American lawmakers and government officials. The New York State Senate unanimously passed Resolution J1895, sponsored by Senator Shelley Meyer. Through this resolution, Governor Kathy Hochul has been called upon to officially declare June 21, 2026 as ‘Yoga Day’ in New York State. The resolution passed specifically mentions yoga’s historical roots in ancient India, its growing popularity among American citizens, and its benefits in promoting overall health and well-being by reducing mental stress.
A proposal for Yoga Day was introduced in the New York State Assembly. This marks one of the largest official support to Yoga Day by a State Government this year. Delaware Governor Matthew Mayer (Matt Mayer) has issued a proclamation officially celebrating ‘International Yoga Day’ in his state on June 21, 2026.
Yoga programs across America
Apart from this, in California, the city of Redlands also expressed support for International Yoga Day. Many other municipalities expressed their support by appreciating the local celebrations as well. On the West Coast, Yoga Day was celebrated near the Golden Gate Bridge at Crissy Field in San Francisco. Indian diplomatic missions and community organizations organized yoga programs in Los Angeles, Seattle and other cities in the Pacific Northwest. Community yoga sessions were also reported in Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Denver, Detroit, Boston and university campuses across the country.
Major programs organized on the occasion of Yoga Day included a devotional yoga program organized by ‘A Lotus in the Mud’ magazine at the Vedic Heritage Hanuman Temple in Hempstead, New York. More than 200 people participated in this event. The program featured meditation, music, dance and a panel discussion on the theme ‘Bhakti a highway to spiritual growth’.
Padma Bhushan awardee and renowned oncologist Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori attended the program as the chief guest. The organizer said that the aim of this program was to highlight the spiritual aspects of yoga as well as its physical and mental health benefits.
