Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral to be held in July, special invitation sent to PM Modi
The funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will now be held in Tehran next month between 5 and 9 July 2026. Iranian President Massoud Pejeshkian has sent a special invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the multi-day state event. However, no official confirmation regarding this invitation has been given by the Government of India yet.
According to diplomatic sources, this invitation has been sent keeping in mind the traditional relations between India and Iran. If Prime Minister Modi attends this program, it will be considered an important occasion in terms of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The funeral will take place after four months
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died on 28 February 2026 during a joint military operation by the US and Israel. According to the initial plan, his funeral was to be held in March, but the event was postponed due to the ongoing military conflict in the region and security reasons.
Now after the situation has become normal, the Iran government has announced the new date of the funeral. The celebrations will last for several days, with representatives from different countries of the world likely to attend.

PM Modi received special invitation
Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian has sent a formal invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral ceremony. Diplomatic sources say that Iran wants the presence of top leaders of many major countries including India in this program.
However, it has not yet been clarified by the Ministry of External Affairs or the Prime Minister’s Office whether Prime Minister Modi will attend the event or not.
Possibility of presence of global leaders
Heads of state, Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers and senior representatives of many countries are expected to attend the funeral to be held in Tehran. Elaborate security arrangements are being made as the event is considered one of the biggest state events in recent years.
Experts believe that this ceremony will not only be a religious and state event, but can also prove to be an important indicator of the changing global equations and the new political circumstances of West Asia.
