John Oliver will remain at HBO through the end of 2027 after extending his contract for another year.
Unlike previous renewals, which typically covered three years, Oliver’s latest extension is for just one year.
The shorter deal comes as uncertainty continues over Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a development the comedian has repeatedly criticised on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
Addressing the proposed merger during a March episode, Oliver joked, “Yeah, not great news. In fact, if I may quote anyone who’s ever accidentally sat on their Roku remote, I’m in Paramount now … how the f-ck do I get out of here?’”
When reports of Paramount’s interest in acquiring Warner Bros. first surfaced last September, he also quipped, “Please stay the f-ck away from us. You are not my real business daddy, and you never will be!”
Oliver has also criticised Paramount’s settlement with the Trump administration over its lawsuit involving CBS’ 60 Minutes, as well as Bari Weiss’ takeover of CBS News.
The comedian returned this week with new episodes of Last Week Tonight following its summer break. Much of the latest broadcast focused on President Donald Trump’s recent actions, a topic that could place Oliver at odds with the incoming Paramount Skydance leadership.
Last Week Tonight was previously renewed for three years in December 2023, carrying the Emmy-winning satirical news programme through its current 13th season. The new agreement ensures Oliver will remain on HBO through 2027.
