A shopkeeper selling Biryani with a picture of Lord Ganesha in Tirunelveli ran into trouble. Locals filed a complaint and protested, alleging that it would hurt religious sentiments. The police immediately removed the banner, registered a case against shopkeeper Jayant and sent him to jail.
The incident took place in VM Chatram area of Tirunelveli. A banner depicting Lord Ganesha was put up at a shop, leading to a police complaint alleging hurtful of religious sentiments. Local builder Selvaraj was shocked to see the banner put up in front of the “Dindigul Kalyan Biryani” shop and lodged a complaint. He alleged that the banner insulted the revered Hindu deity Lord Ganesha and hurt religious sentiments. He lodged a complaint at the Government Medical College Hospital police station, demanding appropriate action from the authorities. Based on the complaint, the police started an investigation, probing the motive and reason behind the banner. Subsequently, biryani shop owner Jayant (30) was arrested and sent to jail.
Last month the news came from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. During Chehlum, at the Makanpur Dargah Sharif in Bilhaur Police Station area, a fierce scuffle broke out over the distribution of biryani while tazias were getting cold. A large crowd of youth gathered to partake of the biryani, forcing the workers distributing the tazia to leave the scene. The crowd then rushed to get biryani. Many people’s clothes were soiled during the scuffle, while some youths had their nails scratched. Onlookers filmed the incident, which has since gone viral on social media. Chehlum is called “Arbain” in Arabic, which means “forty” in Persian. It falls on 20 Safar, exactly 40 days after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in the month of Muharram.
