Many routes will change due to Yoga Day in Kolkata, PM Modi will lead the program

Kolkata: People may face problems due to traffic in Kolkata on Sunday. The city is hosting the 12th International Yoga Day national event at Red Road. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead this program, due to which the police has made a special plan for traffic management in Central Kolkata.

Which roads will remain closed   

Red Road has been closed to vehicles since June 14 for preparations. It will remain closed till the end of the program on June 21. Many roads around the ground and Red Road will remain closed from 2 am on Sunday morning. This includes Hospital Road East and West, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, Kingsway, Queensway, Plassey Gate Road, Dufferin Road, Outram Road and Esplanade Ramp.

Parts of Rani Rashmoni Avenue and Khidirpur Road will also be affected. Guru Nanak Sarani i.e. Mayo Road will remain closed for all vehicles, only those vehicles which have a special permit for the program will be exempted. There will also be a ban on movement of goods vehicles on AJC Bose Road, JL Nehru Road, CR Avenue, Strand Road and St. George Gate Road from Sunday morning till the end of the program.

Where will the path change?   

The police have prepared a diversion plan to keep the traffic flowing. Northbound vehicles will be diverted via Outram Road, JL Nehru Road and Dufferin Road. Southbound vehicles will be diverted via Mayo Road, Dufferin Road and Esplanade Crossing. Buses going to Howrah and Dalhousie will use alternative routes like Belvedere Road, AJC Bose Road and Strand Road.

Kolkata Police has announced additional restrictions on June 20 and 21 due to the Prime Minister’s visit. Except for vehicles carrying essential commodities like LPG, medicines, vegetables, fruits, fish and milk, other goods vehicles will be banned in many parts of the city for a fixed period of time.

There will be restrictions in BBD Bagh area also   

A large part of the BBD Bagh area will remain completely closed between Government Place East, Esplanade Row East, Old Court House Street and BBD Bagh South from 5 pm on Saturday till Sunday afternoon.

Police have said that further changes may be made on main and feeder roads depending on VVIP movement and traffic conditions. Changes are also possible in parking rules and tram movement.

This year around 30 thousand people are expected to participate in the program. The organizers have kept the theme for 2026 as Yoga for Healthy Aging. Thousands of policemen will be deployed across the city for security. The venue of the program and the Prime Minister’s route will be monitored through CCTV and drones.

Officials have asked people to avoid visiting the Red Road Maidan belt and surrounding areas on Sunday and keep extra time for travel.
