Michael Buble opens World Cup with Alanis Morrisette in Canada
Canada marked its moment on the global stage as the 2026 World Cup opened with a homegrown musical showcase led by Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette during the ceremony in Toronto.
Fans arrived in a sea of red ahead of Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with many breaking into an impromptu arrangement of O Canada as they entered Toronto Stadium. The atmosphere set the tone for a night blending sport and national celebration.
Bublé helped energise the crowd before kickoff, performing a cover of Sam Cooke’s Bring It On Home to Mesurrounded by flags representing all 48 participating nations.

His set acted as a warm-up to the Group B clash and drew loud support from the home crowd.
Alanis Morissette, who rose to global fame in the 1990s, then took centre stage for a stirring rendition of the Canadian national anthem, marking one of the emotional highlights of the evening.

The ceremony itself opened with traditional dancers and drummers, followed by a welcome address from William Prince, who paid tribute to Canada’s Indigenous communities while addressing the global audience.
The Canadian showcase follows the tournament’s broader opening celebrations, which began in Mexico City with performances from Shakira and Burna Boy.
Later, the United States’ opening match in Los Angeles is set to feature Katy Perry and rapper Future.

With all three host nations staging ceremonies, the 2026 edition is shaping up as the largest World Cup in history, bringing together 48 competing nations across North America.
