Pakistan’s renewed focus on the Kashmir issue is aimed at diverting public attention from internal challenges facing the country, according to a report by retired Indian Army officer Nilesh Kunwar published in Eurasia Review.
The report claimed that Pakistan is facing multiple domestic issues, including security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an armed separatist movement in Balochistan and growing public dissatisfaction in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB).
Against this backdrop, reports of Islamabad’s plans to launch a diplomatic campaign on Kashmir in the UK and Europe were described as an attempt to revive an issue that has failed to gain international traction.
Targeting Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir’s recent remarks on Kashmir, Kunwar alleged that the absence of criticism of the military establishment within Pakistan had encouraged what he called irresponsible rhetoric.
He referred to Munir’s comments portraying the Kashmir issue as a freedom struggle and criticized the statement, claiming it reflected Pakistan’s continued approach towards the dispute.
Kunwar argued that Pakistan’s proposed diplomatic outreach was unlikely to produce significant results but could be used to influence domestic public opinion.
According to the report, Pakistan’s repeated focus on Kashmir serves as a political tool during periods of internal instability. It claimed that the country’s leadership has historically turned towards the issue to shift attention away from domestic concerns.
The report also referred to Munir’s earlier remarks about being prepared to fight more wars over Kashmir, arguing that such statements were part of a broader strategy to maintain public support.
The comments come amid renewed regional tensions and ongoing debates over security and political stability in South Asia.
