Trump announced that Indian multinational Essar Group is investing a total of $18 billion through its US unit to build the largest steel plant in the US. According to a news agency report, Trump said that the plant will produce approximately 10 million tons of steel annually. The iron ore required for this project will be extracted from mines in Minnesota. It will be processed into high-quality steel at a new steel complex in Iowa. This means that the raw materials will be American and the factory is being set up there, ensuring a secure supply chain at no cost.

Plans despite being hundreds of miles apart
But one question about the project is why Mesabi Metals plans to use iron ore mined in Minnesota to make steel in Iowa, despite the two states being hundreds of miles apart. The Minnesota mine is approximately 250 miles from Iowa's northern border. Cost of electricity could be one of the reasons. Steel production requires large amounts of electricity, and commercial electricity rates in Iowa are slightly lower than in Minnesota. Perhaps this is why the company is considering setting up a factory in Iowa.
When will this project start?
The construction of the project is progressing rapidly and it is targeted to be ready for commercial production by 2030. In the first 10 years of successful operation, the project will contribute a total of $95 billion to the US economy. Initially, it will have an annual capacity of 7.5 million tonnes, which is likely to be increased to 10 million tonnes per annum in the next few years through modern digital and automation technology.
