The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday detained the imam of a mosque in Palishgram village under Mangalkot police station of East Burdwan district of West Bengal. It has been suspected that the detained imam is involved in terrorist activities.
Mohammad Sheikh originally hails from Kulut village in Monteswar area of the same district. According to sources, an NIA team with the help of local police conducted a search operation in Palishgram Purbapara Masjid on Tuesday morning and detained Shaikh. Shaikh's room was then searched, where a diary and a mobile were recovered by the NIA.
Sheikh's connection to Bangladesh?
According to sources, the agency found several Bangladeshi numbers in Shaikh's diary. After interrogation, Imam Shaikh was detained from the mosque and brought to Mangalkot police station. NIA officials are trying to get maximum information from Sheikh.
Sheikh's arrest has left locals in a state of confusion. Talking to the media, he said that Sheikh was working in the mosque for the last three years. His links with terrorist organizations in Bangladesh cannot be considered.

Meanwhile, mosque committee member Ghulam Mustafa and some other villagers said that the arrested imam used to go to Bangladesh all the time. A villager said that he had recently gone to Bangladesh. A few months ago, he again reached Palishgram.
The NIA is investigating the alleged sleeper cell of the Bangladesh-based terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in India. Tuesday's raid and search operation is also said to be for a case reported in the neighboring state of Assam. Also, after the arrest of the Imam, a discussion has started everywhere about where the NIA will investigate further in this regard.
