Italian car manufacturer Piaggio is coming up with a big plan for its expansion in the Indian two-wheeler market. The company has announced the development of a new range of ‘Made-in-India’ commuter scooters, keeping in mind the needs and usage of Indian consumers. The first scooter in this series is likely to hit the market in the first half of 2027.

Until now, Piaggio has been selling premium and luxury scooters under its ‘Vespa’ brand in India. New platform specially for Indian roads

These new scooters will be based on a new platform, which is being developed exclusively for India. This strategic shift will allow Piaggio to control production costs and tailor products to suit the needs of Indian consumers.

Head-to-head with legendary scooters

There is already a lot of competition in the commuter scooter segment in India. These new scooters from Piaggio will compete directly with popular scooters like Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access that dominate the market. Piaggio has to price its scooters very competitively to compete with these cars with a strong dealer network, reliable engines and good resale value.

It will be manufactured at the Baramati plant near Pune

These new scooters will be manufactured at Piaggio’s factory in Baramati. As the plant has sufficient capacity available, the company will not have to incur huge additional costs for the new plant. Initially these scooters will be mainly for the Indian market, but in the future they may be exported to other countries like Africa.

This launch in 2027 could be a new chapter in India’s journey for Piaggio. Piaggio’s success in this segment will depend on three things: affordability, reliability and a strong service network.
