Former England captain Kevin Pietersen is set to make a dramatic return to the national setup after being appointed specialist mentor to England’s men’s white-ball teams ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Pietersen will work with Brendon McCullum’s white-ball coaching staff over the next 12 months as England build towards the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. His return marks his first formal involvement with the England team since his international playing career ended in 2014.
The former batter will initially join the squad for England’s upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. He will also be involved in the winter tours of Australia and South Africa before returning for home series against Pakistan and New Zealand next summer and subsequently the World Cup campaign.
Pietersen brings enormous international experience to the role. During a 10-year England career, he played 136 ODIs and 37 T20 internationals, scoring more than 5,500 runs in the two formats. He also accumulated 8,181 runs in 104 Tests.
His aggressive batting style and ability to perform under pressure made him one of England’s most influential cricketers of his generation. He was part of England’s 2010 T20 World Cup-winning team and later worked as a mentor with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
His South African upbringing could also prove particularly valuable ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Pietersen has extensive knowledge of South African conditions and cricket culture, giving England another experienced voice as it prepares for the tournament.
McCullum welcomed the appointment and said Pietersen’s knowledge and stature would be particularly valuable to England’s batters. The former captain will work alongside Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor as part of the expanded coaching group.
Pietersen said he was proud to be asked to help England pursue another World Cup triumph and described putting on the England uniform again as a deeply special moment.
The appointment also marks an intriguing reconciliation with the England setup. Pietersen’s international career ended amid a controversial relationship with the team management, but more than a decade later he is returning in a role that could allow him to pass on his experience to a new generation.
England will hope that Pietersen’s competitive instincts, tactical understanding and batting expertise can help strengthen a white-ball side seeking to challenge for another World Cup title.
