New Delhi, Read. On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, top Congress leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him. On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi remembered Manmohan Singh by posting on the social media platform 'X' and mentioned his dedicated service towards the country. At the same time, Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Modi wrote on 'X', “Tributes to our former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his birth anniversary. He spent many years in public service and served the country with dedication.” Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in Punjab province of undivided India. He died on 26 December 2024 in New Delhi. He became the 14th Prime Minister of India on 22 May 2004 and took over as Prime Minister for the second consecutive time in 2009. He was the Prime Minister of the country from 2004 to 2014.
Became Finance Minister in 1991, played an important role in economic reforms
Manmohan Singh was the Union Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. During this period, the policy of comprehensive economic reforms was implemented under his leadership. These reforms are seen to be associated with important changes in the Indian economy. During Manmohan Singh's tenure as Prime Minister, there was emphasis on economic policies along with social sector schemes and rights-based governance.
Sonia and Rahul paid tribute in Congress office
Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi reached the Congress office at 24 Akbar Road on Saturday. Both the leaders paid tribute to Manmohan Singh by offering flowers on his portrait. After this, a prayer meeting was organized at Manmohan Singh's residence, which was attended by his wife Gursharan Kaur, other family members and Rahul Gandhi.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, while paying tribute to Manmohan Singh on 'X', said his legacy of honest service in public life, inclusive growth and transformative reforms will continue to inspire generations to come. Describing Manmohan Singh as a visionary politician, Kharge said his landmark economic reforms played a role in transforming India's development journey, creating new opportunities and helping lift millions of people out of poverty.
Rahul said- Guidance will continue to be provided by his contribution.
Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister. He said that with his humility, honesty and foresight, Manmohan Singh gave a new direction to the country's economy and social justice. According to him, Manmohan Singh's historic decisions and contribution in building India will always continue to guide him. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid tribute to Manmohan Singh. Describing him as a skilled economist and successful politician, he said that his economic decisions and policies contributed significantly to the development of the country.
Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014
Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 22 May 2004 to 26 May 2014. Earlier in 1991, he had become the Union Finance Minister. Due to his role in economic reforms, his name remains associated with an important period of India's economic policy. After the death of Manmohan Singh, on his birth anniversary, the tribute paid by Prime Minister Modi and Congress leaders remembered his public life and contribution to the country.
