PM Modi reaches Gothenburg, will hold bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Christerson today
Gothenburg, 17 May. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Swedish city of Gothenburg on Sunday after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Netherlands as part of his five-nation tour. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christerson warmly welcomed his Indian counterpart at the airport.
Gripen fighter jets provided escort in Swedish airspace
Giving special importance to PM Modi’s arrival, Sweden’s Gripen fighter jets escorted his aircraft in Swedish airspace. It is considered a symbol of the growing strategic and diplomatic relations between India and Sweden.
PM Modi expressed gratitude to Christerson for the welcome
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to PM Christerson who was personally present during the welcome at the airport. He wrote in the X post, ‘I am grateful to Prime Minister Kristersson for the special gesture of personally coming to welcome me at Gothenburg Airport. I look forward to further strengthening the India-Sweden friendship during this important visit.

European Business Roundtable Will also meet business leaders
Before this, in another post, PM Modi wrote, ‘Landed in Gothenburg, Sweden. I will meet Prime Minister Kristersson with the aim of taking India-Sweden friendship forward in trade, investment, innovation, defense and other areas. Business, Focus on technology and green energy
If seen, the objective of the two-day official visit (17 and 18 May) is to give a new direction to the cooperation between India and Sweden. There will be an emphasis on further strengthening the partnership between the two countries in trade, technology, green transition, startups, and emerging sectors.
Historical background of India-Sweden relations
India had visited Sweden during the first India-Nordic Summit in 2018. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit will provide an opportunity to further deepen the long-term cooperation between the two countries.
Many important issues discussed in high level talks
All aspects of India-Sweden relations will be reviewed in the talks between Prime Minister Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christerson. This will include topics like defense production, space cooperation, Artificial Intelligence, climate change, startup ecosystem and supply chain.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral trade between India and Sweden is expected to reach approximately $7.75 billion in the year 2025. At the same time, between the year 2000 and 2025, there has been a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of 2.825 billion dollars from Sweden in India.
Preparation to increase cooperation in future areas
Both countries are now working towards further strengthening the strategic partnership in future areas such as innovation-based economy, clean energy, digital technology and defense manufacturing. This visit is expected to give new impetus to India-Sweden relations.
