The installation and unveiling ceremony at Lajpat Bhawan holds immense significance, as organization officials noted that prior to this, no statue of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das existed anywhere in the national capital outside of the Parliament House. The Lok Sevak Mandal, a prestigious social organization originally founded by the legendary freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai, aims to uplift the poor, deprived, uneducated, and backward sections of society. At the personal request of Lala Lajpat Rai, Gopabandhu Das had joined the Mandal and made unprecedented contributions toward social reform and India’s independence movement.

Born on October 9, 1877, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das was a multifaceted personality recognized as a prominent freedom fighter, visionary educationist, fearless journalist, and relentless social reformer from Odisha. Throughout his life, he dedicated every moment to serving the underprivileged, farmers, and orphans. Because of his exceptional selflessness, supreme sacrifices, and tireless public welfare initiatives, he earned the revered title of “Utkalmani,” which translates to the “Gem of Odisha.” His extraordinary life remains a shining benchmark of patriotism, humanitarianism, and selfless public service.
