Rani Mukharjee: Veteran actress Rani Mukharjee of Indian cinema has been conferred with another prestigious international honour in recognition of her remarkable acting career and contribution to social service. She will be conferred with the honorary degree of ‘Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.)’ by La Trobe University in Australia.
The honour was conferred on Federation Square in Melbourne on 14 August 2026 during the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). Rani Mukharjee is being conferred with this prestigious honour in recognition of her remarkable contribution to Indian cinema over nearly three decades, as well as her work for the welfare of women, children and the underprivileged sections of society.
The honour, to be conferred at IFFM 2026 to be held from 13 to 23 August, honours Rani Mukherjee’s long and successful film career as well as her social commitment. Not only has she delivered impressive performances in films like ‘Black’, ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘Hichki’, the ‘Mardaani’ franchise and ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’, but she has also effectively addressed important issues like women’s rights, gender equality, disability inclusion and social change in mainstream films.
Apart from films, Rani Mukerji has also been actively involved in various humanitarian initiatives related to children’s education, health and community development. Therefore, along with acting, her social work is also being recognized globally.
Expressing her happiness at the award, Rani Mukerji said, “Cinema has been the biggest teacher in my life. Stories have the power to evoke emotions in people’s minds and bring about positive change. I dedicate this award to my fans in India and around the world.”
La Trobe University Chancellor John Brumby praised Rani Mukherjee’s work, saying that her contribution is not limited to entertainment but also creates dialogue in society on important issues such as social justice, equality and inclusion.
Meanwhile, Mitu Bhowmik Lang, Director of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, said that this honour is a very proud moment for the Indian film industry and the IFFM.
