The Punjab Government's efforts to promote grassroots sports and steer youngsters towards healthy and constructive activities received a boost with a rural Kabaddi tournament and tug-of-war competition organized at Muthada Kalan village in Phillaur.

The event drew enthusiastic participation from the local community and featured a special showcase match between international Kabaddi clubs NRI Nakodar and Malwa Lions.

Addressing the gathering, Batala MLA Sherry Kalsi, Advisor to the Punjab Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department Deepak Bali and Halqa Incharge Harjot Kaur Lohtiya highlighted the importance of sports in keeping young people away from drugs and encouraging healthier lifestyles.

They said the state government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, was prioritizing sports as a means of engaging youth and reviving Punjab's traditional sporting culture. They also appreciated the organizers for promoting traditional Punjabi sports and creating opportunities for young people to participate in competitive events.

The speakers highlighted the government's flagship “Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan” initiative, which brings athletes from different age groups together, ranging from under-14 participants to senior citizens. The program provides opportunities through competitions, cash prizes, national-level exposure and employment-related incentives.

The government has also been focusing on improving sports infrastructure in rural areas. According to the speakers, more than 3,100 rural playgrounds have been developed across Punjab, along with modern gyms in villages.

They said increased investment in sports facilities and financial assistance for athletes preparing for major competitions would help provide youngsters with better opportunities while strengthening Punjab's position as a leading sporting state.

The initiatives are also aimed at creating a healthier, more active and drug-free generation by giving young people meaningful avenues for recreation, competition and sporting achievement.
