Rajasthan Civic Poll Results 2026: Rajasthan urban local body election results Giving important signals for the politics of the state before the 2028 assembly elections. BJP has emerged as the largest party in the elections, but its performance has also shown shortcomings at some places.
The most important thing is that Congress did not get the direct benefit of BJP's weakening everywhere. Independent candidates performed strongly in many areas, while AAP in Baran and CPM in Nokha made their presence felt in opposition politics.
Of the declared results of at least 10,200 wards, BJP won more than 4,179 wards, while Congress won 3,613 wards. Independent candidates also showed their strength by winning 2,273 wards. This means that in many municipal bodies, BJP or Congress may need the support of independent councilors to form the board.
Why relief news for BJP?
- There is a BJP government in Rajasthan and these results have brought relief for Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma. In the 2023 assembly elections, BJP formed the government by defeating Congress. After this Bhajanlal Sharma was made the Chief Minister. Now the emergence of BJP as the largest party in the local body elections can also be considered a politically positive sign for the government.
- Especially because the state government has faced many controversies and political pressures in the recent past. The issue of NEET paper leak, Karni Sena's protest over UGC rules and questions raised about the condition of government schools had put the government on the radar of the opposition, but the impact of these issues was not visible in the form of massive loss for BJP in the local body elections.
- Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed gratitude to the voters and BJP workers after the election results. He linked this to the public's trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his vision of 'Developed India' and 'Developed Rajasthan'.
- The Chief Minister also claimed that his government has fulfilled 78 percent of the promises made to the public in the last two and a half years.
Why are the results a matter of concern for Congress?
- Congress has performed well at many places and has even left BJP behind in some important municipal bodies, but the biggest challenge before the party is that the votes against BJP did not go to Congress's account everywhere. AAP's victory in Baran and CPM's majority in Nokha point in this direction.
- Congress has been the main and biggest opposition force to BJP in Rajasthan for a long time. In such a situation, if AAP, CPM and independent candidates become strong at the local level, then the question of distribution of opposition votes in the 2028 assembly elections can be important for Congress.
- State Congress President Govind Singh Dotasara called the results a big blow for BJP. He claimed that usually the ruling party gets the advantage in local elections, but this time the vote share of BJP has declined.
- Dotasara also accused BJP regarding ward delimitation and said that Congress suffered loss due to wrong and unequal delimitation. He claimed that if there had been no irregularities in delimitation, Congress could have won about 1,500 more wards.
What is Congress's claim in Jaipur?
Congress has described the results of Jaipur as a big sign in its favor. According to Dotasara, Congress was about 10,000 votes ahead of BJP in total votes in Jaipur Municipal Corporation. He also claimed that Congress's lead in the entire Jaipur Municipal Corporation area was around 60-65 thousand votes. The Congress State President claimed that the 10 municipal corporation areas where the Chief Minister visited. There, BJP could get majority only in four places and the position of Congress and independents remained strong in the remaining six places.
What did Govind Singh Dotasara say?
- When local elections are held, most of the votes go in favor of the ruling party. This has been the trend for a long time, but this time BJP has become completely clear. He got more than 50% votes in the Lok Sabha, and today he has come down to 34-35%.
- In the municipal elections in a big city like Jaipur, Congress is ahead of BJP in terms of total votes by 10,000 votes. So, if we only assess Jaipur Municipal Corporation, then BJP is 60-65 thousand votes behind Congress.
- Whenever BJP was in power, it was ahead by about 9%. Last time when our government was in power, we were ahead by 2-2.5%. The public has shown him a mirror of the misgovernance he has given.
- Out of the 10 municipal corporations where the Chief Minister went, he was able to get majority in only four, and that too because of the dishonest delimitation (division of wards)…In the remaining 6, the majority is with Independents and Congress.
- This shows that this government has completely failed. Panchayat Raj elections are about to come, and in them the Bharatiya Janata Party will have to face double the defeat.
Dotasara also alleged that if the delimitation of wards had not been irregular and 'unfair', the Congress would have won around 1,500 more wards. He said that in the wards reserved for SC women, Congress won 261 seats, while BJP won 186 seats. Whereas, in the wards reserved for ST women, Congress won 53 seats, while BJP won 39 seats. In Ajmer, Congress won 37 out of 80 wards, while BJP won 32 wards.
Big victory for Congress in Vasundhara Raje's stronghold.
One of the most famous victories of Congress in these elections was that of Jhalawar Municipal Council. Jhalawar is considered to be the strong political constituency of senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Here Congress won 18 out of 25 wards, Vasundhara Raje is the current MLA of BJP from Jhalrapatan assembly constituency. In such a situation, this performance of Congress in the area of their political influence is being considered an important blow for BJP.
Shock to BJP in Pali also
Congress also gave a tough challenge to BJP in Pali Municipal Corporation. Pali is the home district of Rajasthan BJP President Madan Rathod. In the elections, Congress emerged as the largest party in the 65-member Municipal Corporation and BJP had to face defeat in its own ward also. This result has signaled the transformation of Pali from a traditional BJP stronghold into a hotly contested political area.
AAP did a big upset in Baran
The result of Baran Municipal Council is one of the biggest news for Aam Aadmi Party in these elections. AAP won majority on its own by winning 31 out of total 60 wards of Baran. Whereas Congress got 18 wards and BJP got 9 wards. Independents won 2 wards. AAP's presence in Rajasthan has still been limited. In such a situation, achieving majority on its own in a city council is a big political boost for the party. This is also a warning for Congress, because a part of the anti-BJP vote is now seen going towards AAP at the local level.
Signs of return of CPM in Nokha
Along with AAP's success in Baran, CPM's majority in Nokha Municipality is also an important aspect of these elections. By securing majority here, CPM showed that apart from Congress and BJP, other parties can also create influence in some areas in the local politics of Rajasthan. This result is important for Congress because the local success of parties like CPM and AAP can affect the distribution of opposition votes in future.
Independents spoiled the whole equation
The performance of independent candidates has attracted the most attention in this election. Independents have won 2,273 wards. There is no clear majority between BJP and Congress in many municipal bodies. In such a situation, independent councilors can play a decisive role in forming the board. That means the election result is not just a story of BJP versus Congress. In many places, the key to real power may go into the hands of independent councillors.
What are the signs for 2028 assembly elections?
It would not be correct to consider these results as a direct result of the assembly elections, because candidates, local issues and personal equations play a big role in local body elections. Nevertheless, three big signs definitely emerge for 2028;
- First, BJP is still in a strong political position in Rajasthan and remains the largest party in local elections.
- Second, Congress remains the main opposition force to BJP, but it is facing the challenge of keeping the anti-BJP vote united in its favor.
- Third, the performance of AAP, CPM and independents shows that in some areas the contest is no longer just between BJP and Congress.
Therefore, before the 2028 assembly elections, Congress will not only have to compete with BJP, but will also have to keep an eye on smaller parties and local forces that can make a dent in its traditional vote bank.
Overall, the BJP has maintained its lead in the Rajasthan civic elections, so this result is a relief news for the Bhajanlal Sharma government, but the picture is not entirely bad for the Congress – its performance in areas like Jhalawar and Pali has challenged the BJP.
The biggest political message is that dissatisfied votes with BJP are not automatically going to Congress. The success of AAP in Baran, CPM in Nokha and independents at many places has complicated the equation of opposition politics. This may be the most important thing in the politics of Rajasthan before the 2028 assembly elections.
