His mother and famous playback singer of yesteryear Krishna Mukherjee has passed away. He said goodbye to the world at the age of 75. As soon as the news of her death came on the afternoon of Tuesday, 22 September, a wave of mourning ran among the entire film industry and Rani's fans.
After the death of Krishna Mukherjee, Rani Mukherjee and her family issued an emotional statement and gave official confirmation. The message shared by the family read, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Rani Mukherjee's revered mother, Smt. Krishna Mukherjee (75 years old), has passed away this afternoon. Our family is deeply grateful to all of you for your love, prayers and support. In this hour of deep sorrow and grief, we request you for privacy.”
Krishna Mukherjee was not only Rani Mukherjee's mother, but she also had a long association with art and music. She was an accomplished playback singer of Hindi cinema and had spread the magic of her voice in many films. She was married to famous film producer-director Ram Mukherjee, who was the co-founder of Hindi cinema's prestigious 'Filmalaya Studios'. Ram Mukherjee died in the year 2017.
Rani Mukherjee was very close to her mother and she always mentioned her special bonding with her mother in her interviews. The real soul behind Rani's famous film 'Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway', in which she played the role of a Bengali mother fighting the entire country's system to get her children back, was her own mother Krishna Mukherjee.
During the promotion of the film in the year 2023, Rani had revealed this, saying, “As an actor, I wanted to bring my own perspective to this character. I did see some references related to the real story, but most of the character I played on screen was actually based on my mother. Out of all the Bengali people I know, my mother is the most staunch Bengali… whether it is feeding food with her hands or applying tilak on her forehead. For that entire role, I needed strength and “I got my inspiration from my mother only.”
