BJP MLA Raju Kumar Singh gets relief from Delhi High Court in Harsh firing case, stay on sentence of 4 years
In the case of harsh firing that took place in a farmhouse in Delhi in 2018, BJP MLA from Sahebganj, Bihar, Raju Kumar Singh has got a big relief from the Delhi High Court. The High Court has currently stayed the four-year sentence awarded by the trial court. Also, the court has ordered his release on a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and surety of like amount.
Why did the High Court give relief?
The bench of Justice Manoj Jain, while hearing the appeal of MLA Raju Kumar Singh, suspended his sentence. The court also took into account in its order that Raju Singh had already spent about two months and 22 days in jail. Moreover, the final hearing on the appeal filed against his sentence is also unlikely to take place in the near future. In view of these circumstances, Delhi High Court stayed his sentence and ordered his release on bail.
What is the whole matter?
This matter is of the night of 31 December 2018. Harsh firing was allegedly done at a farmhouse in Fatehpur Beri, Delhi during New Year celebrations. During this time, female architect Archana Gupta had died due to bullet injury.
After hearing the case, the MP-MLA Court located at Rouse Avenue had convicted Raju Kumar Singh under the provisions of culpable homicide and Arms Act. The trial court had sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh.
Now, after the latest order of Delhi High Court, MLA Raju Kumar Singh has got interim relief from punishment. However, a final decision on his appeal against his conviction in the case is still pending.
