Both countries appealed to BRICS to prepare such strategies so that the group can better face external pressures and challenges. In such a situation, the biggest challenge before India is to ensure that the BRICS forum does not turn into an anti-Western alliance.
Iran called sanctions dangerous
Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that several sanctions have been imposed on Iran in the last few years. This pressure has become more serious in recent months due to military actions by the US and Israel.
He said that these actions, along with the physical damage, have also made it clear that economic security cannot be separated from national and regional security. The impact of pressures on a country's trade, energy infrastructure or financial system can reach beyond its borders.
Putin made serious allegations
Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized those leaders who are adopting every possible means to regain their old global influence. He alleged that for this, actions like military force, damaging industrial and logistics infrastructure, blocking international transport corridors and capturing sea vessels are being taken.
Putin also said that so-called second-tier sanctions were being imposed on countries protecting their national interests.
India will have to strike a balance
The diplomatic challenge before India has become clear from the statements of Russia and Iran. India will have to prevent BRICS from becoming a platform for any one faction while maintaining relations with all major powers under its flexible multi-alignment policy.
US President Donald Trump has already expressed his opposition towards BRICS. At the same time, China is showing interest in de-dollarization and promoting alternative cross-border payment systems that could challenge the Western-controlled SWIFT system. In such a situation, it is considered certain that the US administration will keep an eye on the BRICS discussions.
