New Delhi: Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for his courage and professionalism during a serious mid-air emergency aboard a flydubai flight. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the honour, saying the captain’s actions helped avert a major catastrophe. The award will be presented once Machchhar has recovered.
What Happened Aboard the Flydubai Flight?
The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to reports, the Indian captain was attacked by his co-pilot during the flight, triggering a serious cockpit emergency.
The aircraft reportedly plunged thousands of feet as the situation unfolded. Despite being severely injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene and restrain the co-pilot.
Other pilots on board then took control of the aircraft, which made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. There were 174 people aboard the flight, according to reports
Israeli President Praises Captain’s Courage
President Isaac Herzog praised Machchhar for his bravery and professionalism while announcing the award. He also wished the Indian pilot a full and speedy recovery.
Herzog made the announcement while honouring six Israeli passengers who helped intervene during the emergency. They received the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for their role in helping prevent the incident from escalating into a disaster.
