Srinagar. On Wednesday, the police stopped the protest march of the National Conference (NC) demanding restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir from moving towards the BJP headquarters in Jawahar Nagar. NC ministers, MLAs, leaders and workers gathered near the Guindun Sports Complex in Rajbagh and tried to march towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters. The party had announced to 'gherao' the BJP office in protest against the central government over the delay in restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the police stopped the protesters from proceeding further towards Jawahar Nagar. Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Ittu, while talking to journalists, questioned the purpose of BJP's protest from Lal Chowk to Civil Secretariat and said that the party remains silent on issues related to the people.
Ittu said, “What kind of leader of opposition (Sunil Sharma) is he?” If he had people's interest in mind, he would have talked about issues like reservation.'' NC MLA and chief spokesperson Tanveer Sadiq said Sunil Sharma has no right to talk about resignation or a new mandate, as restoration of statehood is part of the BJP's election manifesto. Sadiq said, “Where is the statehood?”
It's been two years since the elections took place and he (Sharma) is daring to talk about resignation. Meanwhile, the BJP on Wednesday protested against the Jammu and Kashmir government. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Sunil Sharma challenged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to resign from Ganderbal seat and get the mandate again on the issue of restoration of statehood. BJP leaders and hundreds of workers gathered near Ghantaghar located at Lal Chowk and raised slogans against the government with placards in their hands.
