Tamil Nadu Police has made a major change in the security arrangements of former state Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party President MK Stalin by downgrading his security category. MK Stalin, who was till now under Z+ security cover, will now be provided Z category security. This decision has been taken after a high level security review meeting held at the State Secretariat. This step has been taken on the basis of thorough professional and administrative assessment regarding the security provided to any VIP or VVIP leader, so that the state resources can be used appropriately and logically. Decision taken in the meeting of Core Cell Security Wing, reviewed by officials Many top and senior administrative officials of Tamil Nadu participated in the high-level review meeting of Core Cell Security Wing held at the State Secretariat. In this important meeting, Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Home Secretary K. Manivasan, Director General of Police (DGP) Mahesh Kumar Agarwal and several other senior intelligence and police officers attended. During the meeting, all these officers closely studied and analyzed the current security needs of MK Stalin, recent intelligence reports and the nature of potential threats faced by him. This main objective of the officials was to ensure what the level of security should be like in the present times. Only after this entire review process, it was unanimously decided to reduce the security of the former Chief Minister from Z Plus to Z category level. How will MK Stalin's new security arrangements and convoy be? Despite downgrading the security category, Tamil Nadu Police is ensuring that there is no major lapse in the security of the former CM. Under the new security arrangement, MK Stalin will still continue to get strong and well-planned police security. There will be continuous deployment of security personnel and special teams in the front, middle and rear of his official convoy. This security cover will mainly include pilot vehicles, escort vehicles, backup teams and close-protection vehicles which will ensure his security during any of his tours, travels and public events. Although officials have refused to disclose the exact number of security personnel, they have made it clear that this new arrangement will remain in effect until the next regular review meeting, unless there is a need to re-review the security if any special or very serious intelligence input is received in the meantime. There is a regular review process of VIP security every six months. In the state of Tamil Nadu, a set and regular administrative procedure is followed regarding the security arrangements provided to politicians, VIPs and VVIP personalities. Mandatory review of security of all protected persons is conducted every six months as per State Government rules. During this process, reports from various intelligence agencies, the nature and urgency of threats faced by the individual, the extent of their presence among the public, their travel patterns and existing security needs are closely evaluated. On the basis of the report and recommendations of this high level committee, it is decided whether the security category of a leader should be maintained as it is, increased or reduced. Discussion in political circles and clarification from officials. This decision to cut MK Stalin's security has come at a time when the DMK party had to face a crushing defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections just a few months ago.
