Tatkal Ticket Booking New Rules 2026: Long queues will end at railway counters from August 1, token system being implemented – ..

If you also book Tatkal ticket from the railway counter to travel by train, then this news is useful for you. Indian Railways has taken an important step to eliminate huge crowds, jostling and chaos at reservation counters. From August 1, 2026, ‘West Central Railway’ (WCR) is going to implement token based Tatkal ticket booking system at all its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters.

The main objective of this new system is to eliminate long queues at the ticket window early in the morning and to bring transparency in the ticket booking process, so that passengers can easily get tickets without standing for hours.

How will the new token system of Railways work?

Under the new rules, passengers will no longer need to stand in the queue for hours to get Tatkal tickets. Instead, passengers will be given a token number within a stipulated time before the counter opens.

After obtaining the token, the passenger will know his token number and estimated time. After this, instead of standing in the queue, they will be able to wait comfortably and when their turn comes, they will be able to go directly to the counter and book Tatkal tickets.

Timing of taking token for AC and Non-AC Tatkal

Railways has fixed the time for distribution of tokens keeping in mind the existing time limit for Tatkal booking. Passengers will have to approach the counter and collect the token as per the schedule given below:

How many tokens will be available at each counter? Know the fixed limit

In the initial phase, only a limited number of tokens will be issued by the Railways from each reservation counter, so that the system can run smoothly:

Immediate Categorytoken issuance timeToken number per counter (initial)
AC Instant (1A, 2A, 3A, CC)Morning 08:30 AM – 09:00 AM10 tokens
Non-AC Tatkal (Sleeper, 2S)09:00 AM – 09:30 AM15 tokens

(Note: Depending on the crowd and demand of passengers at the station, the local railway administration may make partial changes in the number of tokens.)

What benefits will passengers get from this new system?

  • Freedom from long lines: Passengers will get a big relief from long hours of standing in queues and early morning rush.

  • Improve Transparency: Booking on the basis of token number will curb touts and anti-social elements who enter the queue.

  • Time Saving: By fixing the time of token, passengers will be able to save their time and reach the counter directly at their designated slot.

  • Better crowd management: Chaos and unnecessary crowd in the reservation halls of railway stations will remain under control.

Railway officials say that if this experiment is successful in West Central Railway (WCR), it can be implemented in all other railway zones of the country in a phased manner.
