Team India should not be selected on the basis of IPL performance, Sanjay Manjrekar said – Different strategy is necessary for foreign pitches
New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has advised to focus on some shortcomings of the Indian Premier League (IPL) instead of holding the players directly responsible for Team India’s recent T20 defeat. He said that the national team should not be selected only on the basis of IPL performance, but such players should get a chance who can perform better in foreign conditions also.
India’s recent tour of Britain was very disappointing. Reigning T20 World Champion India faced a 0-2 defeat in the first two-match series against Ireland. After this, the team also had to face a crushing defeat of 0-4 in the five-match T20 series against England.
Manjrekar, while reacting on social media platform
He said that due to the creation of a favorable environment for batsmen in the IPL, Indian batsmen may face difficulties on foreign pitches. According to him, the selectors should select such batsmen without getting affected by the pressure of IPL, who can perform well in different grounds and conditions of the world.
Manjrekar’s concern on the difference between IPL and foreign cricket
Sanjay Manjrekar said that the Indian team will have to play most of the T20 cricket matches abroad in the coming time, hence along with the performance in domestic conditions, importance will also have to be given to the ability to play on foreign grounds.
He said that now it would not be the right way to evaluate players only on the basis of domestic cricket statistics or IPL performance. The team management will have to identify batsmen who can score runs against fast bowlers, bouncy pitches and challenging conditions.
Questions are being raised on the batting friendly pitches of IPL
The IPL has long faced criticism for its batting-friendly pitches and small grounds. Many experts believe that such conditions promote power hitting, but this style sometimes proves difficult in international cricket.
Apart from this, there has also been debate regarding the impact player rule implemented in IPL. Critics say that this rule has tilted the balance of the game more towards the batsmen.
Manjrekar’s advice – batsmen should be prepared for foreign cricket
Manjrekar believes that Indian cricket will now have to formulate a strategy in which priority is given to the players’ technical ability, performance under pressure and ability to play in foreign conditions.
He said that Team India will have to prepare such batsmen for the future who can be successful not only in IPL but at the international level in every situation.
