Apple has entered a new leadership era with John Ternus taking over as chief executive officer on Tuesday, succeeding Tim Cook after his 15-year tenure at the helm of the technology giant.
Ternus assumes the CEO position effective September 1, bringing an end to Cook's tenure, which began in August 2011 following the departure of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
Cook has moved into the newly created position of executive chairman. In his new role, he will focus on engaging with global policymakers and assisting with select company matters. Ternus has also joined Apple's board of directors.
Ternus joined Apple's product design team in 2001 and was appointed senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021. He has overseen hardware engineering across the company's product portfolio and played a role in the development of the iPad, AirPods and several generations of the iPhone and Mac.
His team most recently introduced the ultrathin iPhone Air and the new MacBook Neo.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple,” Cook said while announcing the leadership transition in April. He described Ternus as having “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator and the heart to lead with integrity.”
Cook's tenure saw Apple's market capitalization surge from roughly $350 billion when he took over to around $4 trillionwhile annual revenue increased from about $108 billion in 2011 to more than $400 billion.
Apple's services business also became a significant growth driver during Cook's leadership, generating more than $100 billion annually through offerings including the App Store, Apple Music and Apple Pay.
Ternus takes charge at a crucial time for Apple, with artificial intelligence emerging as one of the company's biggest strategic challenges. His immediate task will include accelerating Apple's AI strategy while preserving the ecosystem-focused business model and serving the company's vast installed customer base.
