TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee attacked in Hooghly, head injured, BJP calls allegations drama

Hooghly: Political tension escalated in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday when senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and party’s chief whip in Lok Sabha Kalyan Banerjee was injured during a clash. The incident took place outside Chanditala police station, where TMC supporters were protesting demanding the release of their arrested leaders and workers.

During the demonstration, a situation of confrontation arose between TMC and BJP supporters. As the situation worsened, additional deployment of police and central security forces had to be made on the spot. Kalyan Banerjee is reported to have suffered a head injury in the violent clash that took place during this period.

Tension increased outside the police station

According to the information, TMC supporters had reached the police station demanding the release of their arrested leaders and workers. During this time, he started a heated argument with BJP workers.

The situation became more tense when BJP supporters started raising aggressive slogans against the protesters. Seeing the situation worsening, the security forces had to intervene.

Kalyan Banerjee came forward after suffering a head injury

After the incident, Kalyan Banerjee was seen keeping a wet handkerchief on his head. He strongly criticized the attack and claimed that he was deliberately targeted.

Kalyan Banerjee said, "When I was going towards the protest site, a group of 10-15 people wearing saffron scarves attacked me. One of them threw a stone at me."

He alleged that he was only going to the police station with a delegation and registering the protest in a democratic manner.

The incident happened a day after the attack on Abhishek Banerjee

This incident has come to light a day after the alleged attack on TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee.

On Saturday, Abhishek Banerjee had come to Sonarpur to meet the family of a TMC worker who was an alleged victim of post-poll violence. It was told that as soon as he came out of his car, the people present there started raising slogans against him.

The crowd accused of throwing eggs and stones

The crowd present at the spot was accused of throwing eggs and stones. It was also said that some people allegedly pushed and assaulted Abhishek Banerjee.

When the situation worsened, the security personnel took them out safely.

Kalyan Banerjee’s protest after the attack

After the incident, Kalyan Banerjee protested outside the local police station. During this, they raised slogans against opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and raised questions regarding the law and order of the state.

He also accused the police of working under the influence of the ruling government.

MPs looked emotional while addressing the people

Later, Kalyan Banerjee addressed the people of his Lok Sabha constituency. He appeared emotional in a video.

He said, "You saw how they (BJP) attacked other MPs and me. Do you think this is correct? I leave this question to your conscience."

BJP rejected the allegations

At the same time, BJP rejected all the allegations of TMC MP outright. The party says that Kalyan Banerjee did not suffer any serious injury.

BJP leaders claimed that the MPs were trying to show themselves as victims to gain public sympathy. The party also alleged that the entire incident was blown out of proportion to garner political headlines.
